Tuesday, May 12th: a day
set a-
side exclusively for the Spring '70
ligh senior class as the traditional
Senior Picnic at Castle Rock in Wallut Creek.
At around 11:20 a.m. , the Greyhound buses in ominous single file,
started their hour long trek. Their
orients: H-12's who paid the 44 price.
Arrival! Off the buses anxiously,
'checking out" Castle Rock Park,
nany going directly to the many pie-
lie tables setting up. others wanting
,o get into the inviting pool as soon
is possible.
Things to do ? Other than the ob-
vious feasting and fooling around in
the pool, there was volleyball, football, penny arcade, and a 501? wagon
ride that went by the Castle Rock,
which did look like a castle. There
was room to move on the fairly spacious pasture-looking grounds (although
the barbed wire put some off)
and above all, people; "tight" friends
and acquaintances, with time to know
people as people, not just "class-
mates. "
5 something P.M. Raindrops spattered the closed tinted windows oi
the Greyhounds whose seats felt more]
comfortable than the trip over. Those!
with energy enough kept the picnic!
spirit from fading away even as the
buses went by familiar surroundings
that spelled 'home was near. " Others
rested quietly and some slept. But
nobody disagreed that the days drew
closer to June Tenth, Nineteen Seventy. .
The Balboa High Alumni Association hired "The Young Californians"
a professional singing group, who was presented to the student body at
a special rally held Tuesday, May 26. The group went through several
renditions of popular hits in a performance that was the Alumni
Association's choice.
Started by the 100 Buc Service Society under Mr. Kafkas and officially
organized on April 17, the Alumni Association now numbers 900 in membership.
The motives to hire "The Young Californians" was inspired
by the purposes set down by the Alumni: to further the good name of Balboa,
to keep members informed on traditions and changes in Bal, and to
be of service to the school. Some of the association's plans are a
scholarship fund for graduating seniors, and an already established
employment committee. Other Assoc. purposes a r e : to maintain ties with
the
community, bring alumni and students together and social events that
promise to be in the spirit that is in Bal's tradition, like the special
event in the works for next fall.
As Mr. Ryan, the emcee of the special rally, pointed out, the work
of the B.A. Association was designed especially to aid its old alma mater.
The presentation of "The Young Californians" was just a start of what the
Alumni Association plans to do for Bal. It's members urge the
'70 class, with their first-hand knowledge of what's happening at school
and of what the student needs and attitudes are, to join their ranks and
alumni to the Balboa Alumni Association

Chosen by his class as the Best
All-round Senior was the class president Gary Fitzer. Gary was also
president of the class when they
were low seniors. Many congratulations to Gary on his accomplishments while
at Bal and we hope his
future is bright and successful.
The Class of Spring 1970 chose
as their favorite teacher Mr. Nick
Kafkas. For three years Mr. K. has
patiently guided his class through
successful and troubled times. He
will long be remembered by all and
as Mr. Ryan said at the 100 Buc Lun-
cheon on May 27: "There is only
one Mr. Kafkas. "
"Good health and happiness to a
great class.
Sincerely,
Nick Kafkas"
